“riding the polished lenses”

I am now three days late in celebrating Ada Lovelace Day, but what’s wrong with extending a good thing?

Caroline Herschel first gained interest in astronomy when she helped her brother, Sir William Herschel, by doing calculations for him during observations. When William Herschel married, Caroline grew distant from her brother, but continued observations on her own. Here are some of the things she found:

Adrienne Rich wrote a poem about her: “Planetarium.”

she whom the moon ruled
like us
levitating into the night sky
riding the polished lenses
